Text on poster:  The Declaration of Independence was drafted in 1776 by a committee of five men including John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman. Thomas Jefferson, recognized for his skill with words, wrote the first draft. It was then edited by the others. Final edits and approval were made by the Continental Congress. The Declaration served as a formal explanation of why the thirteen American colonies had declared independence from Great Britain. It was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776 at the Pennsylvania State House (now known as Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, over a year after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. Fifty-six members of Congress signed the document in 1776. The official signed document is exhibited at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The Declaration of Independence is one of the United States’ three founding documents known as the Charters of Freedom.

The Declaration of Independence is considered America’s “birth certificate.” It is the first attempt in history for a group of common, ordinary people to design and implement a new nation based on self-government and the natural, unalienable rights of its citizens.
